Tile Masterclass #1

Our customers often visit our showroom, knowing that they would like to have tiling work done but are thrown for a loop when they realize that there is much more to tiles. In this first article, of our four-week Tile Master Class, we will introduce to you the types of tiles and their uses

Porcelain vs Ceramic Tiles

One of the most frequently asked question is what is the difference between ceramic and porcelain tiles? The main difference is how they are made.

Ceramic tiles have a glaze with a red clay biscuit, while the porcelain has a white clay biscuit which is fired at a much higher temperature than ceramic, which reduces the amount of water in the clay making it less porous. This attributes to the density and strength of the tile.

As a result of this difference, the installation material (thinset) required for porcelain tile must have a latex additive because of the non-porosity of the tile.

Mosaic Tiles

The meaning of the word mosaic refers to a decorative design made with small pieces of coloured stone or glass, arranged in such a way that it forms a pattern or creates an image. The small size of these pieces makes them ideal to be used in areas with round shapes.

Natural Stone Tiles

For the discerning customer who wants a luxurious look, natural stones tiles are the way to go. As the name suggests, – travertine,  marble, coral stone, limestones etc. are extracted from a quarry in very big blocks, which are later cut into slabs and further polished and cut into the desired tile shape and sizes. When installing always use a white thinset and a sealer is recommended to prevent stains.

Luxury Vinyl Tiles (LVT)

In general, a luxury vinyl tile is made up of multiple PVC layers that have been compressed to form a tile. The most popular shape is the wood-look plank which assists in keeping the floor thin and flexible. The LVT is strong, durable, waterproof, and most importantly, it is very easy to install.

Quarry Tiles

This is a hard and impervious paving tile made from clay that is fired at a very high temperature. It remains unglazed and despite being mistaken to be very delicate, quarry tiles are quite strong and highly sought after in high use commercial areas.
